‘Diamond Hands’ in 2026: Why Retail Traders Are Rush to Buy Silver

Silver is acting strange. Usually, the price of this metal moves slowly based on factory demand or jewelry sales. But in 2026, silver has turned into a rollercoaster.

Market watchers are now asking a big question: Has silver become a “meme stock”? The volatility is reminding everyone of GameStop in 2021. Back then, retail traders on Reddit worked together to send the video game store’s stock price to the moon. Now, they seem to be doing the same thing with silver.

‘GameStop in 2026’

Michael Antonelli, a strategist at Bull and Baird, was blunt. “How is Silver different than, say, GameStop?” he asked. “Is this not a meme now?” He points out that silver prices have gone “vertical,” rising more than 100% in just three months. This doesn’t happen based on normal business rules. It happens when thousands of small investors decide to buy at the same time.

The Reddit Army Returns

The numbers prove that retail traders are behind this. On January 26, individual investors poured $171 million into the iShares Silver Trust (a popular fund that tracks silver prices). That is nearly double the amount seen during the last “silver squeeze” in 2021. On Reddit forums like Silverbugs, the language is exactly like the meme-stock craze. Users are posting “DIAMOND HANDS,” which means they plan to hold onto the silver even if the price crashes, just to prove a point.

“Silver has just become retail’s new favorite toy,” said Vanda analyst Ashwin Bhakre.

Dangerous Volatility

For new traders, this is risky. In the past month alone, silver has had 10 different days where the price moved 5% or more. Tom Sosnoff, CEO of Lossdog, warns that this is dangerous for beginners. “Huge volume, huge volatility, not too much rhyme or reason why,” he said. “It behaves like a meme stock trade.” Rhona O’Connell from StoneX compares the current market to the story of Icarus—flying too close to the sun before crashing down.

While some experts note that silver is still useful for making solar panels and EVs, the current price has little to do with that. As one strategist put it: “Silver is just GameStop in 2026.”
