The High Cost of AI: Oracle Eyes $50B Fundraising and 30,000 Job Cuts.

Oracle stock fell 3% on Monday morning as the company revealed a massive, expensive plan to stay competitive in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) race.

On Sunday, the data center giant announced it plans to raise between $45 billion and $50 billion in 2026. The goal is to build enough computer servers to serve major clients like OpenAI, Nvidia, and TikTok. However, this news—combined with rumors of massive job cuts—made investors nervous.

The $50 Billion Gamble

Oracle needs cash to build data centers. The company plans to raise this money through a mix of debt (borrowing money) and equity (selling ownership shares). While this will help build infrastructure, investors dislike it for two reasons:

  1. Debt: It adds a huge financial burden to the company.
  2. Dilution: Selling new equity makes the shares owned by current investors worth less.

Michael Field, a strategist at Morningstar, called this the “end-game” for AI stocks. He told CNBC: “It’s do or die… [Oracle] is diluting the holding of existing shareholders and taking more debt to fuel this investment, hence the dismay by investors.”

Rumors of 30,000 Layoffs

To pay for all this, Oracle might be cutting its workforce. An analyst note from TD Cowen claimed that Oracle is considering laying off between 20,000 and 30,000 employees. The goal would be to save $8 billion to $10 billion in cash.

Oracle has not confirmed these rumors yet. Other options to save money include selling off assets or changing how they pay vendors.

A 50% Drop Since September

This news is part of a tough trend for Oracle. The stock has dropped 50% since its peak in September. It also fell 11% in December after a disappointing earnings report. Investors are becoming “twitchy” about the high cost of AI. While companies like Meta are spending billions and seeing their stock rise, others like Microsoft and Oracle are being punished by the market when their growth doesn’t match the massive price tag.
